20060710 Dog and Pony Show

20060710 Dog and Pony Show

Houdini has been reincarnated as a dog. A dog named GP (which stands for Good Pup, you can guess who named him). GP's escapes from our yard since his recent arrival have been bold, daring, and usually involving digging under or through our fence, and then coaxing the other dogs to follow him into mischief. Think of Hogan's Heroes. Since the people who live at his house know that this frequently leads to flat dogs on roads, they strove to locate a more suitable abode where his escapades would be far less likely to lead to him impersonating a pancake.

Talesia loves trips to Lynn's brother, TByrd. Well, seeing Uncle TByrd and Aunt Janet is nice and all, but... well, being 5, it's hard to grasp that you should visit with the people before you visit the horses. GP thought the trip was great, he was getting more attention, what was not to love?

GP saw cats walking, nothing interesting there. Then...the MOVED. QUICKLY! The chase was on! He was off like a shot, but darn, those things could go into spaces he couldn't fit! Upon his return, he decided to chase another... wait a minute... this one didn't run? SWAT! Yelp! Ok, maybe we'll leave that one alone.

A dog smaller than GP decided to tell him in no uncertain terms that cats were NOT for chasing! Hmph!

GP saw BIG dogs (Filas weight around 150 lbs). Would they play? YES! Romp, romp, roll, roll, wrestle, wrestle! What fun! Playmates! Those silly people can go inside and eat, GP would stay here!

Time for Talesia to ride the horses. Yay! She helped clean the saddle, call the horses, and get the gentlest one, Mariah, saddled up. Talesia and Lynn's grand-niece went for a nice walk, around and around in the sandy area, with Lynn's niece beside the horse and Lynn leading. A lovely time for a 4-year-old and a 5-year-old. After a bit, the 4-year-old was tired, but Talesia had no intention of getting down, so they parted company.

Faster! Faster! Talesia craves adventure, and going faster would certainly improve things! Mariah trotted, Lynn trotted, and Talesia sang out with excitement! When Lynn's lungs could take no more, Mariah finally accepted slowing to a walk back to the sandy area, and Talesia smiled and accepted that even horses and daddies get tired, so back they went.

What are the people doing? Hey, the other dogs are tired, the cats are hiding, I'll go find the people and see what I can get into!

GP decided to play with the BIIIIG dogs. The ones with the long legs. The one Lynn was leading. The one with Talesia on top. How to get them to play? Bite the only place he can get to, the hind legs, of course.

Have you ever known a horse to tolerate something biting its back legs?

Chaos has been achieve!

GP bit and dodged and bit again, all in play. Lynn held Mariah's lead as long as possible, long enough for Talesia to be thrown from the bucking Mariah into the soft sand instead of into a tree in the woods. Mariah was careful enough to not kill GP as she kicked and careful enough not to step on Lynn as she jumped over him after she knocked him down in her desparate attempt to escape the ankle-biter.

GP has not the sense of an ice cube. After being kicked by a horse and a person, he STILL GAVE CHASE as the horses scattered into the woods, completely mindless of the fact that they could easily kill him without even noticing!

After ensuring Talesia was unhurt, we assured her that she had become a true cowgirl - you can't be one until you've been thrown from a horse. When all the horses had been rounded up and stabled and fed, Talesia sat on Mariah again to ensure Mariah that she wasn't in trouble, that it was ok.

No permanent damage was done to any person, horse, or dog. GP, however, lost his chance at a wonderful life on the ranch with lots of friends and lots of room to run. For his own safety, he is making new friends at a local shelter, where he can find a new home with someone who can give him the attention he needs.

I think I'm glad all weekends don't have that much excitement.
