Oh, the joys of fencing. Not the fun kind, with epee's and people being stabbed and falling over dead - no, that would be too easy. No, we have starteed our long and adventurous journey into the world of building your own fence. And we have an extra-long fence line. And dogs to "help".
We began our trip into the expensiveness of a fence at Lowe's. We had bought prefab fence sections there before, but since we liked them, they are no longer made. We realized that hammering all the nails by hand would slow us so much that by the time we finished, Talesia would be tending the house and we'd be out there with our walkers, so we trundled off to Home Depot to look at nail guns. Hmm, $80 - um, up from there. Ok. Well, we didn't need anything too fancy, we just want to get nails in. They need an air compressor? Another $150? Total configuration around $300 - $400? Eeek! So we slunk off to Target for other errands. There we found a small gun for $100, electric, no generator required. But we were directed to Harbor Freight Tools by a couple of people, so we went to look.
There we were told that the tiny nails that the electric nail gun used, which we assumed we could use 4 small nails where 1 big one would have done, would not, in fact, stand up to the breath of a child, much less the Rita winds that blew down a few sections recently. How did we walk out with compressor, gun, lifetime supply of nails, and all accoutrements for $300? Wait, didn't we leave that behind earlier? So the electric gun goes back...
Then for wood. The nice cedar is HOW MUCH per board? $2.70? Pine is $.99, and will last just as long? Just how does ANYONE ever afford to fence their yard? So, $100 later, we exit Home Depot. Only then do we realize - how the heck are we going to get this stuff HOME? It was a TIGHT fit in the van, with boards EVERYWHERE, and everything else in my lap as Lynn slowly guided the van home. Any accident wouldn't have been fatal from the impact, but the splinters would have killed us!
A few other household necessities, and the weekend ended in the Too Many Hundreds of Dollars range.
Talesia, however, was trooper both days, since we spent both Saturday and Sunday on marathon trips to get stuff done. She chose a smalll water fountain as her reward for such bravery, so it now gurgles happily in her room. We are SOOO lucky to have that wonderful lady!
